The STAR Approach

Situation

Tofiga Fepulea'i, a successful comedian with a growing fan base, needed an online ticketing system to promote his stand-up comedy shows and enable fans to purchase tickets online. Prior to this project, ticket sales were primarily handled through physical venues or third-party ticketing platforms, which limited direct engagement with fans and resulted in higher fees. The client was touring his new stand-up show around New Zealand and needed a digital solution quickly to support his upcoming performances.

The challenge was compounded by the client's busy schedule, which limited the amount of information and feedback he could provide during the design process. Additionally, the project had a tight one-week deadline to align with his tour schedule, requiring an efficient approach to design and implementation.

Task

As the Visual Designer, my responsibilities included:

  • Defining the scope of the client's requirements with minimal information due to his busy schedule
  • Creating wireframes for the online ticketing system that would be intuitive and user-friendly
  • Developing a visual identity that aligned with Tofiga's brand and comedic style
  • Designing a system that could be implemented quickly to meet the one-month deadline
  • Creating a foundation that could be expanded upon by future team members
  • Ensuring the design would effectively showcase upcoming shows and facilitate ticket purchases
  • Developing a visual language that would appeal to Tofiga's diverse audience

Action

I implemented a streamlined design process to meet the tight deadline while delivering a high-quality solution:

Requirement Definition

I began by defining the scope of the client's requirements, gathering what limited information was available and supplementing it with research on comedy event ticketing best practices. I analyzed competitor websites and identified key features that would be essential for the system's success.

Brand Identity Visualization

Due to time constraints, I focused on visualizing the client's brand identity to help guide and roadmap the future direction of the project. I created a mood board that captured the energetic, vibrant, and humorous essence of Tofiga's performances, using bright colors (particularly yellow) that reflected his stage presence and Samoan heritage.

Design Process

I followed a condensed design thinking process, focusing primarily on the prototyping phase given the time constraints. My process included:

  • Empathize: Understanding the needs of both Tofiga and his audience
  • Define: Clarifying the core requirements and constraints
  • Ideate: Generating design concepts that would meet the requirements
  • Prototype: Creating wireframes and visual designs
  • Test: Limited testing due to time constraints, but incorporating feedback where possible

Visual Design Development

I created a visual design system that incorporated:

  • A vibrant color palette dominated by yellow, reflecting Tofiga's energetic performances
  • Typography that balanced readability with personality
  • Layout designs that highlighted upcoming shows and made ticket purchasing prominent
  • Visual elements that reflected Tofiga's Samoan heritage and comedy style
Wireframe (hybrid) Creation

Using Balsamiq, I developed wireframes for the key pages of the ticketing system, including:

  • Homepage featuring upcoming shows and prominent call-to-action buttons
  • Event listing page with details about each performance
  • Ticket selection and purchasing flow
  • About page highlighting Tofiga's background and achievements
  • Contact and support pages

Visual Design Refinement

Using Canva, I created visual design mockups that brought the wireframes to life, incorporating the brand identity elements and ensuring a cohesive look and feel across all pages. I developed a "tone of voice" mood board that guided the visual language and messaging style for the platform.

Result

Despite the tight timeline and limited client input, the project achieved significant outcomes:

  • Successfully delivered wireframes and visual designs within the one-week timeframe
  • Created a strong visual foundation that effectively captured Tofiga's brand identity
  • Developed a user-friendly ticketing system design that could be implemented by the development team
  • The client was able to launch the online ticketing system (https://www.tofiga.nz/) in time for his tour
  • The design successfully balanced functionality with visual appeal, creating an engaging user experience
  • Established a design system that could be expanded upon by future team members
  • The visual identity created for the project helped strengthen Tofiga's online presence

Under new management in 2020, Tofiga successfully developed and deployed the online website to promote his shows and enable online ticket purchases. The design work I provided served as the foundation for this implementation, helping to create a cohesive and effective online presence for the comedian.

Key Learnings

This project provided valuable insights into efficient design processes under tight constraints:

  • Adaptability is Essential: Working with minimal client input requires flexibility and independent problem-solving
  • Focus on Core Requirements: When time is limited, identifying and prioritizing essential features ensures the most critical needs are met
  • Visual Identity Matters: A strong visual identity can guide development even when detailed specifications are unavailable
  • Efficient Tools Save Time: Using familiar tools like Canva and Balsamiq enabled rapid design development
  • Documentation for Future Teams: Creating clear design documentation ensures continuity when other team members take over
  • Brand Alignment: Ensuring the design reflects the client's personality and brand creates a more authentic user experience
  • Streamlined Process: Adapting the design process to fit time constraints while maintaining quality requires strategic focus
